EU mandates digital wallet for ID and driver’s licences from 2027

The European Union has approved a rule that, beginning in 2027, every member state must provide a European Digital Wallet – also known as the EUDI Wallet – enabling citizens to store official documents on their smartphones.

The wallet will hold the national identity card, driving licence, health card, academic and professional certificates and other official papers, all with the same legal validity as their physical counterparts. It will be a secure, privacy‑preserving service that works across the entire EU. Spain will pilot the system in the tourist city of Benidorm later this year, while physical documents will continue to be issued during a transition period.
