EU MEP Dimitris Tsiodras demands stricter checks on low‑value imports

Europarliamentarian Dimitris Tsiodras has asked the European Commission for immediate action and tougher inspections of low‑value parcels entering the EU. He notes that about 6 billion such packages were shipped in 2025, most bought through third‑country platforms, and many may breach EU safety rules, posing a risk to consumer health and safety.

Tsiodras highlighted that the EU’s Early Warning System recorded a record 4,671 alerts on unsafe products in 2025. He requested details on the Commission’s planned measures before the customs‑data hub becomes operational in July 2028, the proportion of the 2028‑2034 Union Customs and Market Programme that will be allocated to coordinated inspections, and how artificial‑intelligence tools will be expanded to improve parcel screening.
