EU Migration Pact faces delays as Hungary lags on implementation

EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner said he trusts that Hungary’s new government will take a constructive approach to the EU migration pact, which includes both incentives and sanctions. Hungary is currently behind on meeting the legal and technical requirements of the pact, and Prime Minister Peter Magyar has not ruled out applying the agreement despite pressure from the ruling Fidesz party. The pact also retains a mandatory quota system, while Germany stands to benefit from faster border‑check procedures that Hungary would provide.

Brunner’s comments were reported by Euractiv, noting that the EU hopes the forthcoming Hungarian leadership will engage positively to avoid a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis.
