Save Europe Act holds controversial Barcelona demonstration
Overview
The Save Europe Act (SEA) movement held its first Spanish demonstration in Barcelona’s Plaça Sant Jaume as part of its ‘European Shield’ tour. The event, which advocated for ‘remigration’ and the closure of European borders, saw a relatively low turnout of approximately 50 to 100 participants. This was significantly outnumbered by hundreds of anti-fascist protesters who gathered to oppose the group.
To prevent clashes between the opposing factions, the Mossos d’Esquadra deployed significant resources, including personnel and trucks, to cordon off a section of the square for the SEA demonstrators.
The Barcelona City Council announced it will report slogans used during the event—such as ‘Remigration saves Europe’ and ‘It is not immigration, it is an invasion’—to the Prosecutor’s Office, citing potential hate crimes based on race, ethnicity, or religion. The movement intends to continue its tour with a scheduled stop in Madrid.
