EU ministers condemn Russian strike that damaged Kyiv’s UNESCO Lavra

On the night of 15 June, Russian forces launched a large‑scale air attack on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv with missiles and drones. The bombardment caused four deaths and injured about 30 people, including children, and sparked fires across Kyiv.

A drone strike ignited the Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, damaging the Dormition Cathedral, the surrounding complex and nearby cultural facilities such as the Arsenal Mysteycky and the Dowżenka Film Studio. Ukrainian authorities reported that icons and other valuables were rescued, but a large portion of the roof was destroyed.

Foreign ministers of France, Germany, Lithuania and the European Union’s High Representative denounced the attack as a war crime and called for tougher sanctions on Russia, highlighting the targeting of cultural heritage. Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski also condemned the strike, urging Christians worldwide to recognize the absurdity of President Vladimir Putin’s actions.

The incident has intensified diplomatic pressure on Moscow and renewed discussions within the EU about expanding punitive measures against Russian energy companies and the so‑called “shadow fleet.”
