Russian missile/drone attacks intensify

Overview

The campaign of coordinated missile and drone attacks that began on the night of 11 July 2026 continued to expand. By 18 July Russian strikes had killed eight civilians and damaged infrastructure in several cities, while Ukraine claimed to have downed 18 of 41 missiles and intercepted 108 drones. Russia announced the capture of settlements in the east and carried out drone attacks on logistics centres in Russia. On 25 July Russian officials said preparations were complete for a major missile‑and‑UAV assault that could be launched within days against Kyiv and the western oblasts of Zhytomyr and Rivne; Ukrainian authorities warned the attack could leave “a landscape of craters like the surface of the Moon”. In the preceding 24 hours Russia fired roughly 160 missiles and hundreds of UAVs, killing at least 11 civilians and injuring 70, while Moscow claimed to have shot down more than 320 Ukrainian drones and over 1,000 UAVs. The next massive wave struck on the night of 29 July, hitting Kryvyj Rih, Kyiv, Poltava and other cities. Six people, including two children, were killed in Kryvyj Rih and the overall death toll reached at least eight, with dozens more injured. President Zelensky repeated appeals for additional Patriot‑type air‑defence systems as Ukrainian air‑defences struggled to intercept the high‑speed ballistic missiles.
