EU bans Brazilian meat imports over antimicrobial use

The European Union officially prohibited the import of meat, offal, fish, honey and related products from Brazil, with the ban taking effect on 3 September. The EU Commission said Brazil could not demonstrate compliance with its sanitary rules, in particular the requirement that no antimicrobial drugs be used throughout the animal production chain. Although Brazil has already restricted some growth‑promoting antibiotics, the EU says further guarantees and traceability are needed.

The suspension threatens a major export market for Brazilian beef, poultry and other animal products. Brazilian industry groups and the Ministry of Agriculture have urged the federal government to provide the required technical information immediately and to prepare for EU auditors. They argue the issue is procedural rather than a question of sanitary quality. The EU indicated that lifting the ban will depend on Brazil providing sufficient evidence of compliance and on the life‑cycle of each production chain; no specific date for reinstatement was given.

Brazilian exporters warn of sizable economic losses and stress that the ban could affect farmers, slaughterhouses and the broader agribusiness sector if not resolved promptly.
