EU Moves Toward Ban on Products from Illegal Israeli Settlements

The European Union is preparing a set of trade measures aimed at stopping the import of goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. EU foreign affairs commissioner Kaja Kallas said the Commission will be asked to draft "options for possible trade actions" to "prevent the import of goods from illegal settlements" after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. Several member states have also called for sanctions against Israeli security minister Itamar Ben Gvir, though no consensus was reached.

In a related commentary, former German ministers, including Sigmar Gabriel and Herta Däubler‑Gmelin, urged the EU to suspend its association agreement with Israel, arguing that Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank breach the agreement’s human‑rights obligations. They cited the high civilian death toll in Gaza, ongoing ICC investigations, and the continued export of settlement products into the EU as reasons for immediate action.
