EU officials underline Turkey's strategic importance as Turkey‑Greece tensions rise

European Union officials highlighted Turkey’s pivotal role in regional security amid heightened tensions with Greece. Andrius Kubilius, the EU’s defence and space policy chief, told Greek outlet Proto Thema that NATO decisions require unanimity, meaning Turkey’s NATO membership directly influences bilateral relations. He recognised long‑standing disputes between Ankara and Athens but said diplomatic channels remain open and that any EU defence funding also needs unanimous consent, with Greece and Southern Cyprus playing key parts.

During a recent Mediterranean visit, EU Commissioner Dubravka Suica described Turkey as “a very important regional partner,” emphasizing its significance for cooperation and stability in the Mediterranean.

The comments reflect the EU’s attempt to balance strategic cooperation with Turkey while managing its fraught relationship with Greece.
