EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation drives industrial sustainability shifts
The European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is driving significant discussions regarding industrial sustainability and compliance. The regulation, which entered into force on February 11, 2025, is set for full application starting August 12, 2026.
In Italy, the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has outlined four primary lines of action to support the transition: providing assistance to operators and supply chains, monitoring EU developments, ensuring national regulatory alignment, and preparing data and control systems, including a future PPWR packaging register. Officials have noted that much work remains regarding delegated acts, with a specific focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Educational and professional forums, such as a workshop at LIUC – Università Cattaneo, are addressing the challenges of the regulation, including the impact of overpackaging in e-commerce and the technological solutions required for more sustainable management. These discussions involve stakeholders from logistics, industry, and e-commerce sectors to navigate the costs and opportunities presented by the new standards.
