EU Packaging Regulation changes coffee capsule disposal rules
New guidelines regarding the disposal of single-use coffee capsules have been implemented following the application of the European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Under the new rules, plastic and aluminum coffee capsules are officially classified as packaging and must be disposed of in multi-material recycling collections rather than general waste.
Users are permitted to dispose of used capsules directly into multi-material recycling without opening or emptying them first. However, if a capsule is emptied, the coffee residue should be placed in organic waste to facilitate better material recovery. Compostable capsules (EN 13432) should continue to be disposed of in organic waste containers.
In response to these regulatory changes, the association TMP is hosting a seminar in Milan on November 5 to guide compounders, printers, and packaging producers through the practical applications of the PPWR. The session will cover compliance documentation, roles within the supply chain, and obligations regarding imports from non-EU countries.
