EU packaging regulations impact Macedonian exporters

The European Union has begun implementing the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), introducing new standards that impact companies exporting to the EU market, including those from North Macedonia. The regulation focuses on the entire lifecycle of packaging, including design, material composition, recyclability, and reuse capabilities.

One of the immediate changes involves restrictions on PFAS, often called ‘forever chemicals.’ Packaging that comes into contact with food and exceeds permitted PFAS limits is no longer allowed on the European market. This affects food producers and packaging suppliers who use these substances for grease and water resistance.

Looking toward 2030, the EU aims for all packaging to be economically recyclable. There will also be mandatory minimum levels of recycled content in plastic packaging; for example, single-use plastic beverage bottles must contain at least 30 percent recycled material by 2030. Companies failing to adapt risk increased costs, the need to change suppliers, and restricted access to the European market.
