EU packaging rules spark concerns for small businesses

New European Union packaging regulations, aimed at reducing waste and improving recycling systems, are causing significant difficulties for small businesses. Under the rules effective since August 12, merchants selling goods across multiple EU member states must register individually in each country and appoint an authorized representative.

European Parliament member Erik Marquardt of the Green Party has called for a unified European declaration to suspend fines for violations until February. Marquardt argued that while the long-term environmental goals are correct, the current level of bureaucracy is overwhelming for small enterprises. He urged the German government to advocate for this delay at the EU level.

In Germany, legislation already stipulates that no fines will be imposed for violations until February 12, 2027, providing companies with a transition period. However, some small retailers have expressed frustration on social media, threatening to reduce the number of countries they ship to in order to avoid the administrative burden.
