EU Parliament approves tariff‑free access for US industrial goods under trade deal

The European Parliament voted to adopt two regulations that implement the tariff‑free provisions of the EU‑United States trade agreement. The main act, passed by 440 votes to 151 with 50 abstentions, eliminates tariffs on all US industrial products and grants preferential market access for a wide range of US seafood and agricultural items. A second act, approved by 444 votes to 152 with 54 abstentions, continues duty‑free import of lobster and processed lobster.

The measures include a “sunset” clause that will see the provisions expire on 31 December 2029, with the European Commission required to assess their impact on EU industry, agriculture and SMEs by 30 June 2029. The Parliament also added safeguard mechanisms allowing the Commission to suspend tariff benefits if the United States re‑imposes tariffs above 15 % on EU steel and aluminium derivatives by the end of 2026, or if the benefits threaten EU sectors. Quarterly reports will monitor trade flows under the new rules.
