European Union adopts new air passenger rights regulation

The European Union has adopted Regulation (EU) 2026/2202, a major overhaul of air passenger rights that will be fully implemented starting 23 October 2027. The new rules aim to balance airline operations with enhanced consumer protections.

Key passenger benefits include clearer compensation for delays exceeding three hours, with amounts ranging from 250 to 600 euros based on flight distance. Passengers will now have the choice between receiving cash or vouchers. Additionally, the regulation mandates free corrections for material errors on tickets, such as name typos, and prohibits airlines from denying boarding to passengers using only the return leg of a round-trip ticket.

The reform also introduces stricter transparency requirements for both airlines and travel agencies. Agencies must provide clear information regarding passenger rights and complaint procedures on their digital platforms. Furthermore, the regulation establishes rules for partial refunds in cases of class changes and requires airlines to offer re-protection on third-party carriers when necessary.
