EU allocates €3.9 billion for Ukrainian drone procurement

The European Commission announced a first disbursement of €3.9 billion from a €90 billion loan package to finance the purchase of advanced drones for Ukraine. The funds are part of a €60 billion military‑aid tranche aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s defence against Russia’s large‑scale invasion.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the payment “supports Ukraine’s ingenuity, which is at the core of its ability to resist the aggression.” High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas added that Ukrainian drones are already pushing the conflict back onto Russian territory. The €3.9 billion will be used for drone production in Ukraine and will be followed by further allocations for ammunition, missiles and air‑defence systems. The loan, of which €3.2 billion was already released for macro‑economic support, must be repaid under highly favourable conditions.
