The European Commission disbursed a €3.47 billion tranche from the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan to fund Ukraine’s defence needs. The money will be used to purchase long‑range jet‑propelled drones, missiles, air‑defence systems and Saab Gripen fighter jets, and is part of the €60 billion of the loan earmarked for defence. Ursula von der Leyen said the funds will help protect Ukraine’s airspace and its population and underline a new “Drone Deal” linking European and Ukrainian defence industries.

The tranche follows earlier disbursements of €3.2 billion (June 25) for macro‑financial aid, €3.9 billion (June 30) and €1.1 billion (July 15) for defence, bringing total EU defence payments to about €8.5 billion. The EU plans to allocate a total of €28.3 billion to support Ukraine’s defence industrial capacity by 2026, and further payments are expected in the coming weeks. Since the invasion, EU and member‑state assistance to Ukraine has exceeded €220 billion.
