EU potential to lead Small Modular Reactor race examined

A new study by the European Liberal Forum (ELF) examines whether the European Union can lead the global race for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The research suggests that while SMRs offer a reliable, low-emission, and continuous source of energy, their development in Europe faces significant regulatory, financial, and technological hurdles, alongside a shortage of specialized human resources.

To maintain competitiveness, the study proposes closer cooperation between national regulatory authorities, more streamlined licensing processes, the use of private capital, and the creation of a European SMR Acceleration Hub.

In Greece, these discussions coincide with the official establishment of a Government Committee for Nuclear Energy. This committee is tasked with studying and evaluating the integration of nuclear energy into the country's long-term energy planning.
