Global small modular reactor technology development
Overview
Developments in small modular reactor (SMR) technology are progressing through hardware fabrication milestones and strategic policy evaluations in the United States and Europe.
In the United States, NuScale Power Corporation and MillenniTEK have produced the first safety-grade pellets for an SMR design cleared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Energy has awarded X-energy $1 billion to support the construction of four SMRs at Dow’s Long Mott Generating Station in Texas, a project that could be online by the early 2030s.
In Europe, a study by the European Liberal Forum examines the EU’s ability to lead the global SMR race, noting that development faces regulatory, financial, and technological hurdles. The study suggests creating a ‘European SMR Acceleration Hub’ to maintain competitiveness. Concurrently, Greece has established a Government Committee for Nuclear Energy to evaluate integrating nuclear power into its long-term energy planning.
