EU Provides €34 million Emergency Aid to Armenia Amid Russian Trade Restrictions

The European Union disbursed €34 million (about $40 million) as the first tranche of a broader assistance package for Armenia. The payment, confirmed by the European Commission, follows a phone call between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and aims to mitigate the impact of Russian export restrictions on Armenian agriculture, food products, flowers and beverages. The package includes trade‑facilitation measures, market‑access initiatives, business‑matching events and targeted support for affected sectors to strengthen Armenia’s economic resilience. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said, “The EU stands firmly with Armenia – a sovereign, democratic and independent country,” and will travel to Yerevan on July 5 to discuss further implementation. Russia, which remains Armenia’s key security and energy partner, has described the EU’s move as a response to its own “economic coercion.”
