EU pushes cross‑border bank mergers after German regulator blocks UniCredit’s Commerzbank bid

Germany's financial regulator rejected Italian bank UniCredit's offer to purchase shares in German lender Commerzbank, citing an insufficient price and what it described as an aggressive approach. The decision underscored Commerzbank's strategic role in financing Germany's mid‑size enterprises and its employment significance in Frankfurt.

EU Commission Deputy Chair Teresa Ribera used the episode to call for a more integrated European capital market. She argued that deeper, cross‑border bank mergers are essential for the EU to mobilise trillions of euros needed for the digital and green transition, to retain household savings within Europe, and to give innovative firms access to growth capital. Ribera said such consolidation would address structural market fragmentation and strengthen the bloc's global competitiveness.
