EU pushes stricter migration controls after unrest in Ceuta

Violent incidents in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where residents smashed windows and erected barbed‑wire barriers, have heightened concerns over illegal migration into the European Union. The episode prompted a meeting of interior ministers from EU member states, who agreed that protecting the Union’s external borders is an absolute priority. They stressed that without tighter restrictions the Schengen area cannot be maintained, and called for measures that prevent migrants who cross the border illegally from later legalising their stay. Polish Deputy Minister of Interior Maciej Duszczyk, representing Poland at the talks, reiterated the need for full control of migration processes and for returning irregular entrants to their country of origin. The conclusions are expected to be incorporated into the agenda of the October European Council meeting, signalling a forthcoming shift in EU migration policy.
