EU Renewable Power Share Hits 47% in 2025

Eurostat data shows that renewable energy accounted for 47.2% of electricity generation in the European Union in 2025, a slight rise from the previous year. Solar photovoltaic output surged 19.2%, offsetting declines in hydro, wind and biogas production. Coal consumption fell to the lowest levels on record since data collection began, while natural gas use increased for the second year in a row, reaching 2.3% growth.

Earlier quarterly data indicated that renewables supplied 45.5% of EU electricity in the first quarter of the current year, up from 42.7% in the same quarter of 2025. Denmark topped the rankings, generating 90% of its electricity from renewables, largely wind power. Other leading nations included Portugal (82.9% largely hydro) and Lithuania (75.7%). The Czech Republic recorded the lowest share at 12.7%, relying mainly on conventional sources.
