EU renewables rise, hybrid boost, solar leads globally

Overview

In 2025, renewables supplied 47.2% of EU electricity, with solar photovoltaic output rising 19.2%. While coal use hit historic lows, natural gas saw a second year of growth. This transition helped the EU save approximately $60 billion in 2025 by reducing fossil-fuel imports, even as the bloc invested roughly $105 billion in renewables.

Globally, renewables added more energy to the supply in 2025 (3.3 EJ) than oil, gas, or coal combined. Solar power accounted for 71% of new capacity, and generation grew 30% alongside a 66% rise in battery storage. China supplied 43.8% of new global renewable capacity, while the EU accounted for 779 GW.

In the EU, solar electricity reached 22.1% of total generation in June 2025, overtaking nuclear, wind, gas, and coal for that month. In Germany, wind and solar produced 44% of electricity in 2025, surpassing fossil fuels. During the June and July 2026 heatwaves, solar accounted for 25% of EU electricity, helping stabilize grids despite drought-related reductions in hydropower.

To further integration, Ember analysis suggests that hybridising wind and solar with existing hydropower in seven EU members could add 25 GW of capacity without new transmission infrastructure. However, only Portugal and Spain currently have specific regulatory frameworks for such projects. Despite these gains, 655 million people globally still lack electricity, and 2 billion rely on polluting fuels for cooking.
