EU Roaming Rules Still Pose Extra‑Fee Risks for Travelers

Since the EU roaming regulation took effect on 15 June 2017, mobile users can normally use their home contracts abroad without additional charges. However, the rule includes several exceptions that can still generate unexpected fees for holidaymakers.

Data allowances provided by foreign operators are often limited to about one‑fifth of the subscriber’s domestic quota, and even "unlimited" plans may be capped when roaming. At EU borders, phones can automatically switch to a non‑EU network, which can also trigger roaming charges. Consumers are advised to verify roaming data limits and network‑selection settings with their providers before travelling.
