EU sanctions tighten customs checks on Russia as war reshapes global gas market

Customs authorities across the European Union are intensifying controls to enforce sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. The measures include freezing assets of designated individuals and entities, applying strict procedures for humanitarian aid shipments, and monitoring trade to prevent circumvention of the sanctions regime.

The conflict has also crippled Russia's gas production, leading to shortages and rationing within its own territory. Europe has accelerated the phase‑out of Russian pipeline gas, targeting a complete ban by the end of 2027 and increasing imports of liquefied natural gas from other sources. The loss of Russian gas market share is expected to have lasting effects on global energy supply chains and pricing.
