EU Sets 2030 Goal to Restore 20% of Land and Sea Areas

The European Union has adopted a nature‑restoration regulation that obliges member states to bring at least 20% of terrestrial and marine areas under effective ecological recovery by 2030. The law also requires measures for 30% of habitat types identified as being in poor condition, and mandates that urban green spaces be protected and expanded, with a focus on pollinator populations.

Croatian State Secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Green Transition, Tanja Radić Lakoš, presented the final draft of the implementing legislation to the Croatian Parliament, noting that the regulation provides clear deadlines for actions within Natura 2000 sites and beyond. She highlighted the regulation’s contribution to climate‑change mitigation, soil‑degradation neutrality, food‑security resilience, and fulfilment of international nature‑and‑climate obligations.
