EU solar power supplies 25% of electricity in June 2026

Solar generation in the European Union reached a new milestone in June 2026, producing 52 terawatt‑hours of electricity and accounting for 25 % of the bloc’s total electricity consumption. This is the first time a single source has supplied a quarter of the EU’s monthly electricity mix, making solar the largest power source for the month, ahead of nuclear (21 %), gas (15 %), wind (14 %), hydro (12 %) and coal (8 %).

The record came amid a hot summer, which boosted electricity demand for cooling while long, sunny days increased solar output. The surge helped offset weaker performance from other generators. Over the past five years solar output in the EU has grown by more than 20 % annually, with 65.1 GW of new capacity added in 2025 alone. In June, 18 EU countries set new monthly solar‑share records, notably Spain (34 % of its electricity), Germany (36 %) and Poland (24 %). The rapid expansion is attributed to fast‑track installations and supportive renewable policies across the region.
