European Commission Vice‑President and Cyprus special envoy Raffaele Fitto arrived in Cyprus on Thursday and held meetings at the Presidential Palace with Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and, a day later, with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The talks focused on ways the EU can support a fair and lasting settlement on the island.

Erhürman warned that recent unilateral and biased actions by EU institutions have further eroded trust, stating that the EU cannot sit at the negotiating table but can play a positive role in confidence‑building measures. He highlighted the need to implement the pending Direct Trade Regulation, resolve difficulties with the Green Line Regulation, and address EU citizenship and property issues affecting Turkish Cypriots. He also called for an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community.

EU Commission Coherence Commissioner Maciej Berestecki affirmed that the EU is ready to play an active role in the Cyprus process, using all tools at its disposal and cooperating closely with the UN Secretary‑General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguín.
