Greenland receives 200 million euro EU investment plan

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a major investment package for Greenland to strengthen the EU's strategic presence in the Arctic. The plan includes approximately 200 million euros earmarked for the 2026-2027 period, focusing on critical minerals, renewable energy, digital connectivity, and satellite communications.

During her visit to Nuuk, von der Leyen met with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The discussions aimed to deepen economic and strategic partnerships, particularly as competition for Arctic resources and maritime routes increases. The EU also intends to provide roughly 9.1 million euros over five years to improve satellite internet services in remote areas of Greenland.

Looking further ahead, the European Commission has proposed increasing direct support for Greenland to approximately 530 million euros for the 2028-2034 budget cycle. While the investment seeks to secure supply chains for essential raw materials, Prime Minister Nielsen clarified that Greenland does not seek membership in the European Union.
