EU tax on low‑value imports targets Temu, Shein and similar platforms

The European Union will apply a new charge on parcels valued under €150 that are shipped from outside the bloc. The measure aims to curb the surge of cheap e‑commerce imports and level competition for EU retailers. Implementation is slated for 1 July 2024 in some member states, with a broader rollout set for 1 July 2026 that introduces a provisional €3 flat duty per product category in each parcel, lasting until at least 2028.

Platforms that rely on low‑price, small‑volume shipments—such as Temu, Shein, Trendyol and similar Asian‑based sellers—are expected to see higher final prices for consumers and a possible reduction in order volumes. The tax could benefit local and intra‑EU sellers by narrowing the price gap with overseas goods, though details on collection and transition periods remain unclear.
