EU threatens Temu with up to $617.5 million fine

The European Commission has accused the Chinese‑owned e‑commerce platform Temu of obstructing an investigation into foreign subsidies that may distort competition in the EU internal market. The Commission says Temu refused to provide basic information on how its EU operations are organised, the IT tools it uses and its accounts.

An unannounced raid was carried out at Temu’s EU office in Dublin, Ireland, in December last year. If found guilty, the company could be fined up to 1 % of its 2023 revenue – roughly $617.5 million (about 5.8 billion NOK) based on PDD Holdings’ reported $61.8 billion turnover. Temu has been given the chance to respond, while the subsidy investigation continues in parallel.
