EU Tightens Rules for Able‑Bodied Ukrainian Men Seeking Refuge
The European Union Council voted to end the simplified admission regime for able‑bodied Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60 who have not served in the Ukrainian armed forces or received a health exemption. The regulation will be published in the EU Official Journal and will take effect the day after publication.
Under the new rules, only men who can prove they have fulfilled military service obligations or have a valid exemption will continue to benefit from the fast‑track protection scheme in EU member states such as Germany. Men who do not meet the criteria must apply for regular asylum, with significantly lower chances of obtaining a residence permit. Exceptions are granted for fathers of at least three minor children and for those exempted on health grounds.
