EU tightens sustainability traceability rules for Brazilian beef

The European Union has raised its sustainability, traceability and antimicrobial‑use standards for products entering its market, adding new environmental and control requirements for Brazilian agribusiness. Researchers say Brazil must adapt its production chains, with added costs especially for smaller producers, to maintain access to the EU market and to use the EU’s standards as a benchmark for other regions.

In response, Brazil’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee (CRE) is expanding coordination with the federal government and the beef sector. Plans include meetings with the new EU ambassador, regular hearings with producers, industry groups and officials, and a working group to develop strategies that meet the EU’s demand for proof that meat is not derived from animals treated with prohibited antimicrobials and that trace the product throughout the supply chain.
