EU to Classify Coffee Capsules as Packaging from August 2026
From 12 August 2026 the European Union’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will legally treat single‑use coffee capsules, tea bags and other monodose drink portions as packaging. The change requires manufacturers to add environmental labelling that identifies the material of the capsule and to take responsibility for its collection and recycling. Member states will still decide the exact collection system, so capsules will not automatically be placed in the yellow bin across the bloc.
Recycling remains technically challenging because the aluminium or plastic shell must be separated from coffee grounds, which can be composted. The regulation also foresees a gradual ban on other small single‑use items such as ketchup packets and hotel cosmetics, starting in January 2030.
