Ceuta Port: Spanish government seizes control for migrant camp
The Spanish central government has seized control of the Port of Ceuta to establish a temporary migrant camp, overriding a decision by the local Port Authority Board to reject the use of port lands. The project, authorized by Transport Minister Óscar Puente, aims to install approximately 50 tents on 16,000 square meters of land to accommodate around 1,000 migrants. The local government and Port Authority, led by President Juan Jesús Vivas, opposed the move, citing concerns that the installation is incompatible with normal port operations and poses risks to critical infrastructure.
Minister Ángel Víctor Torres defended the measure, stating that the facilities are temporary and will be dismantled once migrants are processed and returned. The decision follows a period of significant tension in Ceuta, where thousands of migrants arrived in late July. Amidst the crisis, reports of violence have emerged, including the detention of 21 Moroccan nationals following an incident where migrants allegedly threw stones at military and Civil Guard patrols near the Trampolín beach.
Political friction has intensified as the central government accuses local leaders of political maneuvering, while opposition figures demand greater accountability regarding intelligence and border management. Meanwhile, the Spanish government has also activated the START humanitarian emergency response team to assist with the logistics of the crisis.
