EU tomato production shifts as Spanish yields decline

European tomato production shows shifting trends, with Spain remaining the largest producer at 25.3% of the EU harvest despite a decline in output. Spanish yields dropped from an average of 2.20 million tons in 2015-2017 to 1.64 million tons in 2022-2024. In contrast, Poland and Belgium saw significant growth in production, while the Netherlands and France experienced declines.

Greenhouse cultivation remains the standard for EU tomato production, accounting for approximately 79.5% of the total harvest in 2022-2024. Poland saw a substantial 28.2% increase in greenhouse tomato yields.

Market data indicates that extreme summer heat has impacted greenhouse vegetable prices and volumes. Recent figures show rising prices for tomatoes and peppers due to heat-related fruit damage and lower supply volumes. For instance, the average price for vine tomatoes reached 1.329 euros per kilo in week 32, while yellow pepper prices exceeded 2.5 euros per kilo.
