European agricultural production and weather impacts
Overview
European agricultural production is facing challenges due to shifting yields and extreme weather conditions. While Spain remains the largest EU tomato producer, its output has declined from an average of 2.20 million tons in 2015–2017 to 1.64 million tons in 2022–2024. During the same period, Poland and Belgium saw production growth, whereas the Netherlands and France experienced declines.
Extreme heatwaves and prolonged drought have further pressured the supply and quality of fruit vegetables. Jonathan Vandesande of FMB noted that high temperatures in late June and early July caused flowers to shed, resulting in a “sharp temporary drop in production.”
These environmental factors are impacting various sectors: greenhouse vegetable prices for tomatoes and peppers have risen due to heat-related damage, while open-field cultivation faces water pumping restrictions. Additionally, insufficient soil moisture has led to smaller cauliflower and pear harvests, forcing some producers to begin harvesting earlier than usual.
