EU Trade Committee Chair Bernd Lange Predicts End of US Tariffs by 2029

Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, said he expects the 15% tariffs imposed under the Turnberry agreement to be lifted by the end of 2029. He noted that the United States continues to apply 50% tariffs on EU steel and aluminium, but anticipates that exemptions for special and high‑quality steel will be agreed by year‑end.

Lange argued that U.S. industry relies on European steel for machinery and automotive production, and that recent shifts in U.S. policy reflect greater recognition of the benefits of reciprocal trade. He also referenced the impact of former President Trump’s Greenland remarks on prompting a more unified EU stance.

The EU is expected to adopt a tougher negotiating position, seeking broader trade benefits if new talks with the United States commence.
