EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance holds first meeting to boost production

The European Commission has organized the first meeting of the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance, an initiative designed to strengthen the drone and counter-drone industries in both Europe and Ukraine. The alliance includes 18 founding members, comprising manufacturers, innovators, and startups from EU member states, EFTA countries, and Ukraine.

European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius emphasized the need for rapid industrial capacity, stating that design cycles must occur in weeks rather than months to keep pace with evolving threats. The alliance aims to accelerate the development and production of next-generation autonomous systems and counter-measures.

The initiative follows a drone agreement announced in July 2026 as part of the EU-Ukraine Defense Industrial Pact. While European production currently reaches approximately 1.5 million drones annually, the alliance seeks to bridge the gap with the much higher production volumes seen in the conflict zones. Joint production of combat-proven autonomous systems is expected to begin by the end of this year.
