EU Ukrainian refugee numbers reach 4.43 million under temporary protection

Eurostat data reveals shifting trends in the number of Ukrainian citizens receiving temporary protection across the European Union. As of July 31, 2026, approximately 4.43 million non-EU citizens fleeing the Russian invasion were under temporary protection in the EU, a slight increase of 0.5% from June.

Germany remains the primary host country with 1,290,225 beneficiaries, accounting for 29.1% of the total. Poland follows with 953,060 individuals, though it has seen a significant decline; the number of protected Ukrainians in Poland dropped by 8,110 in July alone. This decrease may be attributed to individuals changing their residency status, returning to Ukraine, or moving to other member states like Germany or the Czech Republic.

In Bulgaria, 76,385 people are under temporary protection. While not among the highest in absolute numbers, the country maintains a significant presence of displaced persons. Recent data shows a contraction in registered beneficiaries in Bulgaria, which officials note may be linked to administrative updates and the termination of certain statuses rather than a simple physical departure.

Other notable increases in beneficiaries were recorded in the Czech Republic, Romania, and Germany, while declines were noted in France and Cyprus.
