EU-US trade deal: One year after the Turnberry agreement
One year after the Turnberry agreement between US President Donald Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the bilateral trade deal remains in effect. The agreement established a 15 percent tariff ceiling on most European imports into the United States. In exchange, the EU agreed to abolish tariffs on US industrial goods.
Currently, the actual flat tariff rate applied to most EU imports into the US is 10 percent. This lower rate follows an announcement by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who cited concerns regarding forced labor among approximately 60 trading partners. The EU Commission has responded positively to these latest developments, stating that EU exports are either benefiting from or are equally treated under the new regulations.
To protect against potential policy shifts, the EU implemented a safety net allowing it to suspend its own concessions if the US fails to uphold its commitments or suspends existing agreements.
