EU works to strengthen Ukraine's anti-missile defense after Russian attack

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union is working with member states and partners to strengthen Ukraine’s anti-missile defense capabilities. This move follows a massive Russian aerial assault that killed at least 12 to 15 people and injured dozens more.

During the overnight attack, Russia deployed approximately 40 ballistic and cruise missiles alongside 168 drones. While Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 145 drones and most cruise missiles, they were unable to intercept any of the ballistic missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for additional anti-ballistic interceptors, noting that current Patriot missile supplies are insufficient. He stated that without adequate anti-ballistic defense, Russia will not take peace negotiations seriously. Von der Leyen characterized the targeting of civilian infrastructure and residential buildings as a sign that Russia is losing the war and seeking revenge against civilians.
