Eugene N. sentenced to life in Dutch court for Rwandan genocide role
A Dutch court in The Hague has sentenced a 66-year-old man, identified as Eugene N., to life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The court found him guilty of war crimes and genocide, specifically citing his involvement in the massacre of approximately 3,000 Tutsis at a stadium in Mbazi.
According to the court, Eugene N., who was a local official at the time, participated in the looting and burning of homes in Tutsi communities. Witnesses and evidence established that he directed attackers to prevent escapes and personally threw a grenade into the crowd of people sheltering in the stadium. While the court found him guilty of genocide and war crimes, he was acquitted of the specific charge of inciting genocide due to insufficient evidence.
The defendant, a Dutch national of Rwandan origin, had lived in the Netherlands since 1998. Although Rwandan authorities sought his extradition in 2014, Dutch law prevented the transfer as he had acquired Dutch citizenship. Following a years-long investigation that included interviewing dozens of witnesses, he was arrested in 2024.
