European Central Bank to introduce new euro banknotes by 2030s

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced that new euro banknotes are expected to enter circulation gradually starting in the early 2030s. This follows a massive public engagement effort where nearly 10 million people participated in an online survey to vote on potential design themes.

The ECB Governing Council is expected to make a final decision on the design concept by the end of 2026. The current selection features two primary themes: ‘European Culture,’ which highlights historical figures such as Marie Curie, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Leonardo da Vinci, and ‘Rivers and Birds,’ which focuses on Europe’s natural ecosystems and institutions.

Beyond aesthetics, the new series aims to improve security features to combat counterfeiting, increase the physical durability of the notes to reduce environmental impact, and enhance accessibility for visually impaired individuals. Existing euro banknotes will remain valid and continue to circulate alongside the new series.
