Eurobirdwatch records high bird counts in Italy

The Eurobirdwatch initiative has recorded significant avian activity across various Italian locations. In the Biviere di Gela reserve, a record 276 pink flamingos were counted. The census, organized by BirdLife International and partner organizations, identified 65 different species totaling 1,621 individuals, including herons, spoonbills, and the rare rufous heron.

In the Sila National Park, specifically at Lake Ariamacina, the event also yielded record numbers. Observers documented 2,655 birds belonging to 58 species. A notable highlight was the sighting of 1,750 swifts within a four-hour window. Other recorded species included black storks, kingfishers, and pale swifts, underscoring the high biodiversity of the protected areas.
