Eurobirdwatch 2026 migratory bird observations in Italy

Overview

The Eurobirdwatch 2026 initiative, a pan-European effort to observe migratory bird species, was scheduled to take place in Italy on October 3 and 4, 2026. Organized by BirdLife Europe and coordinated by LIPU, the event targeted specific locations including Calabria’s Lago di Tarsia, Palude del Lago di Ariamacina, and the Mesima River mouth, as well as the Biviere di Gela Nature Reserve in Sicily.

Following the event, census data revealed significant avian activity and high biodiversity in these protected areas. In the Biviere di Gela reserve, observers recorded 65 different species totaling 1,621 individuals, including a record count of 276 pink flamingos. In Sila National Park at Lake Ariamacina, the census documented 2,655 birds across 58 species, highlighted by the sighting of 1,750 swifts within a four-hour period.
