EuroLeague unveils €3.4 billion expansion and franchise plan

EuroLeague has unveiled an ambitious ten-year strategic plan aimed at significantly increasing the league's valuation and revenue. The plan involves distributing €3.4 billion to participating clubs over the next decade, comprising €2.2 billion from commercial revenues and €1.2 billion from new franchise fees. The league aims to reach an annual revenue of €648 million and a total market value exceeding €13 billion within ten years.

A major component of this strategy is the expansion of the competition from 20 to 24 teams, organized into two conferences. This transition includes a shift toward a franchise model, with several clubs already identified as primary candidates for new permanent memberships. Reports indicate that Valencia Basket, Paris Basketball, Dubai BC, and PAOK Salonicco are positioned to be the first four franchises, with entry fees estimated to total approximately €300 million. Specifically, PAOK is expected to pay the highest fee at €130 million, while Valencia and Paris are projected to pay €50 million each, and Dubai €70 million.

Amidst these financial developments, former EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has expressed concerns regarding a proposal from the NBA. He characterized the NBA's potential involvement as a “significant step backward,” arguing that it could undermine the independence of European clubs and shift control away from the member organizations that have built the league's prestige over the last 26 years.
