EuroLeague implements AI system for referee delegation

The EuroLeague has implemented an advanced artificial intelligence system to automate the delegation of referee crews for both EuroLeague and EuroCup matches. Developed in collaboration with the EuroLeague Referee Department, the AI algorithm analyzes a complex set of parameters to ensure impartiality, consistency, and transparency in officiating assignments.

The system applies 14 specific rules categorized into three primary pillars: sports criteria and integrity, calendar and workload management, and match context. These rules cover aspects such as referee hierarchy, crew balance, nationality combinations, travel frequency, physical workload, and the specific importance of a match relative to referee experience.

Daniel Hierrezuelo, Director of the EuroLeague Referee Department, stated that the technology allows the organization to analyze vast amounts of information in seconds to apply a uniform set of criteria. The system successfully debuted during the opening round of the EuroLeague and is scheduled to expand to the EuroCup in the coming week.
