AI integration in European basketball officiating

Overview

European basketball leagues are adopting artificial intelligence to enhance officiating processes.

The EuroLeague has implemented an advanced AI system to automate the delegation of referee crews for EuroLeague and EuroCup matches. Developed with the EuroLeague Referee Department, the algorithm uses 14 rules across three pillars: sports integrity, workload management, and match context. Daniel Hierrezuelo, Director of the EuroLeague Referee Department, noted the technology allows for the rapid analysis of vast information to apply uniform criteria. The system debuted during the opening round of the EuroLeague and is scheduled to expand to the EuroCup.

Similarly, the ABA League is using AI to analyze officiating performance in relation to match statistics. The system focuses on reviewing contact criteria, defensive positioning, shot classification, block legality, and contact during rebounds. Rather than being used for disciplinary measures, the technology provides clubs and referees with professional overviews and reports containing video footage and expert explanations. In the second round of the current season, the system analyzed 144 situations.

To increase transparency, Miguel Angel Perez, President of the ABA League Refereeing Commission, presented a detailed analysis of officiating from the first four rounds. The league has introduced a manual of officiating criteria and utilizes high-resolution video reproduction for detailed reviews. Management has also held meetings with all 20 clubs to discuss these measures, noting that approximately 180 situations are analyzed per round.
